H-E-B parking garage going up

File this one under: "Something being built you'll be curious about, but that won't impact your life (unless you work at H-E-B headquarters)."

Earlier this year, H-E-B began construction on a seven-story parking garage at Dwyer Avenue and César E. Chávez Boulevard. The structure will include a pedestrian bridge over Chávez that connects the garage (on the downtown side) with the grocery company's headquarters (on the King William side).

"With the growth of our company and the growth of our corporate headquarters, we needed a more sustainable solution to our very tight parking situation," said Dya Campos, H-E-B's director of governmental and public affairs.

No closure of Chávez is expected.

"We'll build everything on site, and we're also going to build the pedestrian bridge on our property and then put it up," Campos said.

The garage is scheduled for completion by next summer. Campos declined to give the project's cost. She also said, unlike some private garages, this one won't be open to the public during nonbusiness hours.
