As I near the end of Matthew Desmond's eye-opening book "Evicted," I stumbled on this quote. I can't get it off my brain. Not only has it become lodged there, it's expanding. The quote is Desmond's conclusion to a conversation often had between liberals and conservatives when they talk about why people who live in poverty do so with flatscreen TVs, or new expensive sneakers on the feet of their children. He talks about how liberals try to change the subject when confronted with this argument by conservatives. And how, if liberals want to
